Bookmarks of a Blog Junkie: The Art and Craft of Fail

by Alison Berry

There’s no better time-waster and information provider than blogs and I am a self-proclaimed blog junkie. Food, fashion, crafts, cute, humor, completely useless, usually anything I can click to and holds my interest for more than five minutes.

My guilty favorites are “fail” blogs, specifically food and craft. There’s just something very satisfying about looking at another’s crafting and cooking failures. Personally, I think it kindles sense of kinship, especially since a lot of my crafting and cooking adventures turn pear-shaped more often than not. My latest one? Fudge. I can never get the right texture. Drives me nuts. Anyway, I’m pretty sure that we all secretly enjoy seeing other people’s massive failures one way or another (hello, America’s Funniest Home Videos).

Here are my big two:

Cake Wrecks: Exactly how is sounds. Cakes that are existentially silly, creepy, pitiful, or in dire need of spell-check from professional (or well meaning grocery store) bakers. Of course, they also post inspirational cakes that make your mouth water. Best part is that you can contribute your own cake wreck photos!

Image from regretsy.comRegretsy: On the crafty end of the scale, this blog showcases certain handmade crafts that available for sale on Etsy. But these aren’t just any crafts.

They are the hilariously-sad, the terrifyingly-weird, the full-of-bull-descriptions, the not-handmade-at-all and, of course, the blaring-spelling-and-grammatical errors. All these, along with a handful of WTF alchemy requests and the occasional off site product, come with wonderfully snarky comments and images that will (hopefully) bring a smile to your lips.

Now, before you get all butt-hurt for Regretsy tromping on the dreams and egos of crafters, note that all the craft posts, are links to the product. In other words: free advertising/traffic! What could be better? I admit that there a few things that I wouldn’t mind buying… Anyway, in addition to all revenue generated by Regretsy being donated to charitable causes, the site often organizes fund raisers for artists in need, which is pretty awesome.

Cheers!
