Betsey Johnson Proves to be Unsmotable With New Show

by Mary Grace Garis

After filing for bankruptcy last spring, Betsey Johnson has risen from the ashes like a hot pink, sparkly phoenix. That’s right, on May 12 Betsey is set to star in “Xox Betsey” on Style Network, and it looks like quite the party.

“Xox Betsey” let’s us pick the mind of the quirky fashion legend and her relationship with daughter Lulu. That crazy kind of mother-daughter dynamic is something particularly intriguing, as it may serve to humanize the exaggerated, eccentric character of BJ.

Or heighten it: a clip shows Betsey hiding underneath the table to avoid an argument with Lulu, and she comments on her grandchildren’s crayon drawings: “Look what the kids did to this table!”

“Well they’re artistic!” Lulu retorts. What a family.

So fights are fought, fashion shows are formulated, trips to Japan are taken, and as you can expect, wackiness ensues.

Though her clothes can get a bit heavy-handed with the whimsy – my high school wardrobe is half Betsey Dresses, so my closet’s a sea of ruffles – her career is no-less impressive. Not only has she spent the past four decades bringing a slew of fanciful, candy-colored frocks into the world, but she’s a breast cancer survivor and activist. And at 70 she still does her trademark cartwheel at the end of every fashion show. 70! I could barely get out of bed this morning, let alone do a cartwheel ever.

So to sum it all up, there ain’t no party like a Betsey Party, and the Betsey Party don’t stop unless this gets cancelled. And even then, I doubt that would truly stop her.

Be sure to check out the trailer below, if you think I’m kidding.
