Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino Is Bringing Her Best With Her First Solo Album Natural Disaster

by shannon carlin

On Bethany Cosentino’s solo debut Natural Disaster, the Best Coast founder tackles love—self and romantic—in the time of climate change. She’s looking for miracles amid wildfires on raucous alt-country-fried opener “Calling On Angels,” preaching YOLO optimism to combat climate doomism on the rocking title track, channeling Sheryl Crow and Bonnie Raitt on romantic piano ballad “I’ve Got News for You,” and finding personal growth while the world burns on the roll-your-windows-down rocker “My Own City.” “Easy,” her first self-declared “healthy” love song, is about a transformative romance that makes the world seem less scary. Despite her fears, there’s nothing cheesy about that.
