Before and After at Gallery Hanahou!

by Team Intern

I might have to become a crafty bird just so I can participate in this oh so awesome craft group and event…Gallery Hanahou in NYC (611 Broadway Suite 730) presents the clever pieces from the Ossu! Shugeibu craft club from Japan Oct. 14th-Nov. 13th in an exhibition called Before and After.

Ossu! Shugeibu, which translates to Yo! Crafting Club, uses repurposed materials and freestyle techniques free of rules and conventions to create oddball crafts that make me smile. The group, which was founded by Shichi Ishizawa in 2003, started as a group of eight creative, craft-virgin men who were interested in traditionally female-centered crafts. The club quickly gained a following (is now all over Japan, Korea, France, Italy, and the US) and is now populated by men and women.

Gallery Hanahou is holding an opening party on the 14th from 7-9 pm, which will include a surprise participatory event, and will have a make your own robot pet workshop (costs $29.99) on the 17th, from 1-4 pm. And hey, this little guy will walk and talk! Be sure to reserve your spot for the 17th by emailing [email protected]. You can take a peek at a video of the robo pet after the jump!

If you want to check out the Ossu! Shugeibu blog, you’ve been warned, it’s in Japanese but you can get a glimpse of what they do through their pictures. Now that I’ve given the group a peek, I will certainly be checking out the exhibition in the coming weeks.
