Barbie–that Girl’s Gone Mild!

by Lisa Kirchner

It may not be approved by Mattel, but the new Rev. Barbie comes to you from the House of God. That’s right, an Episcopal priest from Kent, Ohio (Rev. Julie Blake Fisher) has designed the latest professional incarnation for Barbie.

The Episcopal Church has been ordaining women since 1976, though not without controversy. Women are kept out of leadership position in many evangelical and Pentecostal churches. And of course the Catholic Church does not ordain women at all.

While it couldn’t be claimed that the 2000-issue President Barbie had any bearing on Hilary Clinton’s bid for the White House, perhaps the effect will be realized by 2020, after a full generation has had a chance to enjoy the Madam Barbie.  What might this mean for the future of the clergy?  Check that out–the Barbster is showing full-on leg over there. A recovering Catholic myself, I can’t even imagine what it might have been like to grow up in a church where you could discuss spiritual matters with someone who led a basically  normal life, except that they spent a lot of time thinking about said spiritual matters.

Back on planet Earth, you can become a fan of the Rev. Barbie on Facebook. Check out the fashion show pics! Totally awesome.
