Aziz Ansari Explains Feminism on Letterman

by Natalia Hadjigeorgiou

Anyone who has seen Aziz Ansari on Parks and Recreation knows that classic Tom Haverford smile, right? Well that was me after watching Aziz Ansari, who was featured in this feminist magazine, hilariously explain feminism on Late Night with David Letterman.

Ansari tells “Late Night” host David Letterman that his girlfriend is a “big feminist” and she has influenced him. He simply explains, “To the people who didn’t clap I don’t believe you. If you look up feminist in the dictionary, it just means someone who believes men and women should have equal rights.”

He goes on to explain that in our culture people tend to associate being a feminist as “some woman who’s going to start yelling at them”. We share the same values as him: you are a feminist if you believe men and women should have equal rights. “You have to say yes because that’s how words work.”

Thank you Aziz! It’s refreshing to see someone just as frustrated with the stigmatism that is associated with feminism.

Aziz points out, “You can’t be like, ‘Oh yeah I’m a doctor that primarily does diseases of the skin.’ Oh, so you’re a dermatologist? ‘Oh no, that’s way too aggressive of a word! No no not at all not at all.’”

To top this great video off, Ansari uses power couple Beyonce and Jay-Z in concert as an example. “You’re a feminist if you go to a Jay Z and Beyoncé concert, and you’re not like, ‘Mmm, I feel like Beyoncé should get 23 percent less money than Jay Z.'”
