The Augusta National Golf Club, aka the Masters Tournament course, has decided to allow women (albeit only two) into their prestigious club in Georgia. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and financier Darla Moore are the two first female members.
Some are praising the club for this move, and noting that it represents a milestone for women in business. However, I can’t understand why any woman would even want to be part of a club that has only now, in 2012, decided to allow women to join. In a related note, the club didn’t admit its first African-American member until 1990. Yes, 1990. An L.A. Times article reminded us that former club chairman Hootie Johnson once said “There may well come a day when women will be invited to join our membership but that timetable will be ours and not at the point of a bayonet.” Apparently the time has come for the club to finally adapt (at least for PR purposes) to modern-day society.
