The latest video from Cut’s “Strange Buds” YouTube series involves actress Aubrey Plaza smoking marijuana with the Sisters of the Valley, better known as “the Weed Nuns.” It was the perfect setting and topic for such a video, considering that Plaza, who smokes, is one the stars of the upcoming convent-set comedy film, The Little Hours.
“I see you – I mean I have guilt because I’m Catholic,” says Plaza to Sisters Kate and Evie, five minutes after she takes her first hit of the provided “Purple Cream.”
Though Kate and Evie wear traditional habits, they are self-proclaimed nuns and are not officially members of any religious community. Their order “respect[s] the breadth and depth of the gifts of Mother Earth and work[s] hard to bridge the gap between her and her suffering people,” according to their website.
In an attempt to close this “gap,” the Sisters of the Valley grow cannabis in Merced, California, and make cannabidiol (CBD) products for medicinal use – all of which is prepared during moon cycles. Business Insider reported that they originally sold their CBD products on Etsy, but were stopped in 2016 after they violated Etsy’s drug policy. Since then they have developed their own website, where they sell a variety of products, including topical salves, oils and tinctures. Kate says during the five-minute long video that growing and selling these products is how they support themselves. The Sisters of the Valley “generated roughly $750,000 in sales” last year, according to Business Insider. She proceeds to say that they also grow weed so that they can “create honorable, spiritual jobs for women.”
Kate reveals that she founded the convent in 2011 after then-First Lady Michelle Obama was pursuing her 2008 policy initiative to help fight childhood obesity.
“Michelle Obama tried to talk to Congress about how unhealthy our children’s meals are,” she says during the video, referring to when the then-First Lady wanted to change the National School Lunch Program. “Congress declared pizza a vegetable because it made our children’s meals look healthier than they are. So I declared myself a nun. I said, ‘If pizza is a vegetable, I’m a nun.’”
During the segment, Kate also teaches Plaza how to properly trim a bud, to which Plaza momentarily panics after she thinks she did it incorrectly. But as the video goes on they continue to talk and clip the cannabis, where Kate tells Plaza that she surprisingly liked The Little Hours, calling it a “delightful story” – despite having watched the trailer prior, which, for her, was compact with “trashy” moments.
After hanging out with Kate and Evie and learning more about their order, Plaza declares, “I want to be a weed nun,” to which Kate gives her approval with smiles and kisses to the cheek.
The Little Hours, which hits the silver screen June 30, also stars Fred Armisen, Alison Brie, Dave Franco, Kate Micucci, Nick Offerman, John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon.
