At Bluestockings: Read, Eat, and Get Informed

by Intern Tessa

Hey there fellow NYCers– are you a community member, a community organizer, or an activist? Do you dislike all kinds of oppression, enjoy food, and appreciate art? If so, let me draw your attention to a place you should be visiting on the regular: Bluestockings, a radical bookstore, fair trade café, and activist center on the Lower East Side.

Want an empowering book? You’ll find it here. Been meaning to brush up on your gender studies or expand your knowledge of black liberation? Look no further. Want to understand global capitalism in more depth or dive into queer theory? Jump in!

The café, besides being fair trade, offers vegan and organic treats. Events take place most nights: this Thursday at 7, the store is hosting a free reading from the book Counterpower: Making Change Happen by its author, Tim Gee. It’s all about what has worked (and what hasn’t) for movements of change for the past 300 years. I don’t know about you, but I’ve felt drastically overwhelmed by how to “stop bitching and start a revolution,” so free advice on the subject sounds good to me.

Check here for more event info, and if you’re local, stop by the NYC store at 172 Allen Street (between Stanton and Rivington).
