Ashley Jayne Meyers On Her ’60s-Meets-Victorian Style

by BUST Magazine

In our Fashion Nation series, we talk to people about their sense of style.

Tell me about this outfit.

The hat was made for me by a designer who goes by the name Mad Hatter. The blouse and the skirt are both vintage [from the] ’70s, and the funny thing is, I found them on separate occasions. The choker I made—I make a lot of my own jewelry. The boots are vintage as well. They’re my favorite Victorian boots because they’re so comfortable. The basket is from Etsy. I love baskets during the spring and summer.

How would you describe your style?

Oh gosh, I feel like I have so many different looks, but I once asked my boyfriend and he said, “Sixties mod meets Victorian fairytale.” I guess that sums it up.

How do you pick out your outfit of the day?

I don’t like planning outfits, I just go by how I’m feeling in the moment, and it’s reflective of what I am listening to musically as well. I’m not into bright colors unless they’re in a psychedelic piece. Otherwise, I like more black and earthy colors. Sometimes I’ll wake up and put on a fun, playful outfit if I’m in a good mood, or maybe I’ll put on a longer, poetic outfit.

What fashion icons have influenced you?

There are so many fashion icons from the ’60s and ’70s—I love Stevie Nicks. [Also], my mom and my aunt. I love looking back and seeing their old photos, like we genetically have the same style.

Do you have a favorite piece of clothing?

Mostly anything that has sentimental meaning behind it. I actually still have a skirt from when I was a little girl and somehow I’m still able to wear it. It sounds insane, but I think I was 12.
