In case the occasional Poetry in Motion subway poster isn’t really doing it for you art-wise, MTA Arts for Transit is officially upping its game. From March 25th to 31st, the MTA will be partnering with Creative Time to present “HEARD•NY”, a groundbreaking installation by artist Nick Cave. The show will consist of a herd (get it?!) of 30 Soundsuits that resemble colorful, shaggy horses. The suits will be installed in Grand Central Station’s Vanderbilt Hall. Twice a day, the horses will participate in “crossings,” choreographed movements during which two students from The Ailey School will inhabit each Soundsuit while accompanied by two harpists.
Artist Nick Cave (no, not this guy)
This show plays to Cave’s strengths as an artist; his wearable fabric statues (which he calls Soundsuits) are his claim to fame, while his own training in the Alvin Ailey dance program imbues his work with music and movement. All in all the installation, which is part of a series of events celebrating Grand Central’s centennial, sounds pretty incredible. See y’all there!
