An All-Woman Action Movie? Yes, Please!

Expendables 2 grabbed the top spot at last weekend’s box office, grossing $28.6 million, according to the Washington Post. Makes sense – folks love watching good triumph over evil in gory bloodbaths. But if you’re tired of all-dude action movies in which an entirely male cast, most of who are well past their fighting prime, blow people to bits in an hour and a half, you’re not alone. I was wondering why there’ve been so few decent lady-fronted action movies since the Lara Croft or Kill Bill series.

Well there’s good news on the horizon, because Adi Shankar, producer of 2011 Liam Neeson action flick The Grey, told Variety that he is putting together an all-female version of Expendables. Simon West, director of Expendables 2 was glad to hear it, telling Total Film that he wants the cast to include the likes of Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, Milla Jovovich, Helen Mirren, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Obvious additions would be Uma Thurman and Natalie Portman (V For Vendetta style). Personally, I’d also like to see him incorporate some unexpected actresses, like an Olsen twin or Courtney Love.

But will this lady-fronted action movie be just as targeted towards heterosexual men as flicks like The Expendables? Will the women in it be oversexualized in true Hollywood fashion, a la the ludicrous Sucker Punch? We’ll have to wait and see. Nevertheless, I’m still pumped to see some badass chicks kick butt. Who would you want to see team up together in this movie?
