Amy Sedaris Is The Coolest Godmother Ever

by Brenda Pitt

I have loved Amy Sedaris ever since I read The Book of Liz, a play of hers in which a nun with a perspiration problem finds herself by making cheese balls. The veteran BUST cover girl fascinates me, from her perky humor to her real cultural impact (she supports animal rights and has outspokenly defended her choice not to have kids). Even in her Downy laundry detergent commercial, she is hilarious and complex, dressing like a 1950s housewife to do laundry with the assistance her male intern.

Sedaris recently sat down with David Letterman on The Late Show, and she was as cheerful and witty as ever. In her giant A-line skirt, she pokes fun at her lack of maternal aspirations, discussing her rabbit in a subtle and good-humored subversion of the talk show norm of celebs talking about their kids. She says of her reaction to these talk show guests, “when you don’t have kids, you’re like, ‘come on, lets talk about… car racing.’”

In my personal favorite part of the interview, Amy tells the hilarious story of a babysitting adventure gone wrong. She recently took care of her two-year-old godson and let’s just say it was not a picture perfect Downy-lady type of day. The kid got wet in the sink, dried off with a blowdryer, almost slipped on some knives, and ended up with a backwards diaper. As Letterman put it, Sedaris is no longer allowed to supervise the toddler unsupervised.

In other highlights, Sedaris discusses skincare, network television, fashion, and new business ventures. The interview is classically Amy: witty, subversive, and packed with smiles. Watch it below, and let us know what you think in the comments section!
