Amy Schumer Shuts Down A Sexist Jab On Twitter

by Madeline Raynor

Amy Schumer shut down a young male reporter’s sexist joke about her after Sunday’s Critics’ Choice Awards. On Monday, teen film critic Jackson Murphy tweeted the following (the tweet has since been taken down):

Spent the night with @amyschumer. Certainly not the first guy to write that.#CriticsChoiceAwards pic.twitter.com/ejDtPLrR2V

Schumer tweeted this response.

Murphy’s joke was a bunch of slut-shaming nonsense, and I love that Amy Schumer called him out. I can perfectly imagine this tweet in her voice. Murphy has since apologized in two tweets, the second of which Schumer responded to, gracefully accepting his apology.

Schumer won two Critics’ Choice awards: the MVP Award and Best Comedy Actress for Trainwreck. Her speech was hilarious and very real, as usual. The highlight was when she said, “If you’re an actress and you have this area right here [gesturing to her stomach], you have to write your own stuff if you wanna get it made.” Preach. If you’re an actress who isn’t a beautiful toothpick, Hollywood will not write starring roles for you. However, you can write them yourself and then become as awesome as Amy Schumer, so believe in your dreams, y’all.

So, the moral of the story is: never tweet. Or if you tag a celebrity in your tweet, don’t be surprised if they actually respond. Even if you subtweet something mean about them, you might end up on Mean Tweets.
