Amber Heard Is Doing Something Totally Awesome With The Money From Her Divorce

by Gabrielle Diekhoff

No one, especially hopeless romantics like myself, likes to hear news about yet another divorce. It’s especially terrible when the reason fueling the separation is domestic violence or abuse of some kind. To say that such stories are depressing and wholly disheartening would be an understatement.

After 15 months of marriage, actress and model Amber Heard recently filed for divorce and a restraining order from her husband Johnny Depp after outing him as an abuser. For months, Heard and Depp’s lawyers have been battling it out in court – a process that, for victims of domestic violence everywhere, is mentally and emotionally taxing. But finally, the case is settled. Heard will be receiving $7 million from Depp as a divorce settlement – a solid chunk of change in exchange for an abusive, traumatic marriage – but, she will not be keeping it. The entire $7 million will be donated – half will go to the ACLU to support other women who have fallen victim to violence, and the other half will go to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

In a statement to USA Today, Heard says, “As described in the restraining order and divorce settlement, money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves.”

In this truly admirable act of generosity, Heard is making the best of all of the shit that she’s had to go through for the past 15 months and is doing what she can to have a positive effect on the lives of people who desperately need it. Stay strong, Amber! <3
