Album Review: Nikki Lane | All or Nothin’

by BUST Magazine

Nikki Lane met Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys at her pop-up vintage clothing stall. She was wearing a hunting jacket he wanted to buy. It turned into a case of being in the right place at the right time. Auerbach ended up producing Lane’s sophomore album All Or Nothin’, a collaboration nothing short of sensational. The 13-track record starts of with “Right Time”, an outlaw anthem that showcases Lane’s bluesy soul and country attitude. “Sleep With a Stranger” is another good-girl-gone-bad tale of a wanton woman, with country guitar inflections that make it more than worthy of heavy rotation. Auerbach and Lane sing together on the electric “Love’s On Fire”, a definite highlight due mostly to twangy guitars, gorgeous harmonies, and an endearingly narrative.  All Or Nothin’ is not strictly a country album. Lane has the ability to effortlessly mix and showcase different genres through her skillful songwriting and artistry. Pared down tracks like “Out of My Mind” and “Want My Heart Back” recall songs of yesteryear and are akin to something you might hear from retro pros She & Him. All Or Nothin’ is the right mix of classic country meets rocker chick with a large dose of attitude. [Lara Streyle]
