Album Review: BANKS | Goddess

by BUST Magazine

Last year, BANKS quietly dropped her initial EPs Fall Over and London, causing mass hysteria fueled by torch single “This Is What It Feels Like.” From there it was BANKS BANKS BANKS, commonly called the “female Weeknd,” yet her full-length Goddess surpasses any comparisons thrown her way.

Some familiar tunes from the first EPs are present on Goddess—including the dismally gorgeous “Waiting Game” and the fluidly soulful “Warm Water.” New cuts like “You Should Know Where I’m Coming From” and “Under The Table” showcase the singer-songwriter as an adept balladeer, while “Alibi,” “Drowning,” and the title track bring her to Folktronica Queen status, as she crafted every song acoustically first and then incorporated electronic production.

BANKS even channels her inner Aaliyah on the ‘90s-esque highlight “F**k Em Only We Know.” Goddess displays every dimension of BANKS’ range—a goddess indeed. –Kathy Iandoli
