AFROPUNK Festival Expands Lineup

by Gwen Berumen

Since its beginnings in 2002, the AFROPUNK festival has grown into a a highly anticipated and expertly curated event. This year is no exception.

Last year, we saw acts like Questlove, Danny Brown, Le1f, Death, Trash Talk, and Mykki Blanco take the stage. This year, AFROPUNK will feature “the best assembly of female musical talent since Lilith Fair,” according to a statement from their press release. It’s self-described as “a voice for the unwritten, unwelcome and unheard-of.” Artists Lianne La Havas, Meshell Ndegeocello, Valerie June, The Internet, SZA, Alice Smith, Tamir Kali, Straight Line Stitch among others will lead the effort that’s wonderfully expanding the unconventional nature of the festival.

Their press release also announced the expansion of the lineup, with the addition of: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Bad Brains, Fishbone, Cro-Mags, The Bots, King Britt, and more.

The festival promotes the work of artists in alternative genres as well as the promotion of local and smaller artists. This year, AFROPUNK AFTER DARK which is a strictly community-based initiative aimed to highlight some Brooklyn venues, will happen on both nights of the festival.

Honestly, AFROPUNK is one of my favorite things in the world. It beautifully highlights diaspora with music. Among everything else, it’s also free (donations encouraged)!

AFROPUNK will take place on Aug. 23rd and 24th at Fort Greene’s Commodore Barry Park.

“Feel the music, free your mind, join the movement.”
