The Rockettes Want Respect!

by Intern Courtney

The holidays are nearly upon us, and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is in a week, kicking off the Christmas season. One of the season’s most time-honored acts, the “Radio City Christmas Spectacular,” has received a makeover. Santa may gasp, but The Rockettes, who are known for their astonishing kick line, are breaking from tradition this year.

Director and choreographer Linda Haberman wanted to take the legendary ladies out of the dancing dark ages, and turn them into humbug-fighting heroes. The group’s new number is called “Humbugged: Rockettes to the Rescue.” She described her vision to the New York Times, saying, “ I want to show the women’s strength and their athleticism because that’s a side of them that never gets seen by the general public.” Haberman has fulfilled her mission with “Humbugged” by cutting the traditional kick line and introducing karate kicks in boots to the video-game inspired number. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular will be running through January 2, 2012, and I highly recommend the show! Come out and support some talented ladies trying to revamp their image.
