A Dollar a Day Keeps a Baby at Bay

by Team Intern

In my home state of North Carolina, in the city of Greensboro,  young girls are being paid $1 a day for every day that they go without being pregnant. Normally I wouldn’t agree with this type of monetary reward (I was never one of the lucky kids that got paid for stellar report cards growing up; my family went out for Mexican instead) but this program, supported by the Obama administration, seems to be working as a positive reinforcement for teenage mothers.

According to NPR, ‘Cass Sunstein, President Obama’s pick to head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, is a vocal supporter of the program, because it’s an economic policy that shapes itself around human psychology.’ Read the full story here .

How amazing would it be if a mere $28-$31 dollars/month could decrease the number of children born to an underage mom? That’s innovative politics. ~Hannah
