In the past couple of years, the number of Americans who support same-sex marriage finally surpassed the number of those who oppose it. Data was compiled by Pew Research Center. The numbers show that in 1996, 65% opposed it, while only 26% endorsed it. New data collected this past October shows that 49% are actually in favor of it, and 40% oppose it (which is down 4 % from this past July).
Still, those numbers widely vary in different regions of the U.S. Its probably no surprise that the New England region supports same-sex marriage by 62%, and that the South Central region opposes it. The best news stemming from all this new data is that support for same-sex marriage has grown in every region by at least 11%. Support has increased 19% in both the Great Lakes and Mid Atlantic regions. Looks like things are getting better.
