A Cinematic Summer

by

As a Creative Director and illustrator based in Brooklyn, New York, summer has always been a season of transformation—a time when the heat slows everything down and gives us space to reflect on who we are. As a visual storyteller, I often find myself looking for inspiration in the movies I watch. I’m fascinated by how a simple color palette or a specific composition in a film can capture a feeling that stays with you long after the credits roll.

This series, A Cinematic Summer actually started as a personal diary. I wanted to record the films that moved me, but I didn’t want to just write about them; I wanted to “draw” the emotions they gave me. Whether it’s the restless energy of a New York street in Frances Ha or the quiet, humid stillness of a Japanese seaside in Our Little Sister, each of these movies has a unique visual texture that feels like summer to me.

In this collection, I’ve curated nine films that explore growth, family, identity, and the courage to be different. Each illustration is my way of deconstructing these cinematic moments into simple shapes and bold colors. Summer is about traveling—not just to new places, but also deep into our own memories. I hope this list inspires you to find your own favorite summer movies and discover the beautiful details in the stories around you!

Frances Ha

This black-and-white movie is about a girl named Frances trying to make it as a dancer in New York. It’s full of energy and shows how messy life can be when you’re young and broke in the city. I love watching it in summer because it feels like a restless, hot afternoon where you’re just wandering around trying to figure things out. It reminds me that even if life is chaotic, you can still find your own rhythm. It taught me that it’s okay to be “undateable” as long as you stay true to yourself.

Billy Elliot

Set in a tough mining town, a young boy named Billy discovers his passion for ballet instead of boxing. Even though it’s a gritty story, it has a “breakthrough” energy that feels just like a fresh summer breeze. I recommend it because Billy’s courage to be different is so powerful. When I watch him leap, it reminds me to break free from other people’s expectations. From this film, I learned that following your heart is the only way to feel truly alive and free.

Our Little Sister

This Japanese film is about three sisters who welcome their half-sister into their home in a seaside town. It’s a very quiet, peaceful movie filled with the sounds of cicadas and the smell of the ocean. It’s perfect for summer because it feels like a slow, humid afternoon spent with family. I really like the gentle bond between the sisters. It taught me that healing takes time and that the simplest moments in life—like sharing a meal—are often the most precious.

Little Miss Sunshine

This is a funny story about a dysfunctional family cramming into a bright yellow van for a long road trip. It’s the ultimate summer movie because everyone has had a stressful family vacation at some point! I recommend it because it’s hilarious but also very heart-touching. It taught me that you don’t have to be “perfect” to be a winner. Even if your “van” breaks down, as long as your family is pushing it with you, you’re doing fine.

Summer in Provence

Three siblings go to visit their grumpy grandfather in the sunny French countryside. It captures that classic summer vacation feeling—sun-drenched gardens, long meals, and family arguments. I love the beautiful Mediterranean colors in this film. It reminds me of the importance of roots and connecting with older generations. From this movie, I learned that even the most stubborn people can change, and that summer is a great time to fix broken relationships.

4 aventures de Reinette et Mirabelle

This movie shows four short stories about two friends with very different personalities. It’s mostly just them talking and walking, which feels exactly like those long, lazy summer days spent with a best friend. I’m a big fan of the director Éric Rohmer because he can make even a simple conversation feel so smart and beautiful. I love how simple and graphic the visual style is. It reminds me to pay attention to the small details in life. It taught me that a good conversation can be just as exciting as a big adventure.

Waterboys

A group of high school boys decides to start a synchronized swimming team. It is a super fun and energetic movie that will make you want to jump into a pool immediately! I love the pure, “don’t care” attitude of the characters. It’s a great reminder that summer is for trying new things, even if they seem silly. From this film, I got a lot of positive energy and realized that doing something you love with friends is the best feeling in the world.

How to Talk to Girls at Parties

This is a wild mix of 70s punk music and aliens visiting Earth. It’s about a shy boy who falls for a girl from another planet during one crazy summer night. It’s weird, loud, and full of color, which fits that restless late-summer vibe perfectly. I recommend it for its unique style and brave attitude. It reminds me of that feeling of being a teenager and wanting to explore the unknown. It taught me to be more adventurous in my own life.

Picnic at Hanging Rock

On a scorching hot Valentine’s Day, a group of schoolgirls goes on a picnic and some of them disappear. This movie is very mysterious and has a dream-like atmosphere. It’s perfect for a hot summer night when everything feels a bit strange and still. I love how it stays so quiet yet suspenseful, and the beautiful aesthetics make you want to keep watching until the end. The subject is very unique and sticks in your mind and that is exactly what makes this film so fascinating.
