For their upcoming EP A Little Lucky, Montreal electro-pop duo Milk & Bone (Laurence Lafond-Beaulne and Camille Poliquin) teamed up with their hometown electro-funk heroes Chromeo for a serendipitous collaboration born in an elevator at the 2019 Juno Awards where Milk & Bone won Electronic Album of the Year. That chance encounter led to Chromeo producing the EP, infusing it with a lighter, more buoyant touch. The result? A collection of sleek, highly danceable pop tracks that stick with you after just one listen.
One standout is “Bloodshot”, a deceptively sweet-sounding track that initially feels like a sugary ode to lustful romance. Chromeo’s signature bouncy grooves pair seamlessly with the duo’s airy vocals, creating an infectious, upbeat mood. But as the song progresses, a darker undercurrent emerges: the lyrics hint at obsession and sleepless nights. “People call me crazy / I tend to agree / But only you can read me,” Lafond-Beaulne and Poliquin sing in unison. It’s a glittering earworm with a slightly sinister twist, pop perfection with a bite.
Another highlight is “Hoops”, written during the isolation of the pandemic. Here, the lyrics reflect the ache of solitude and the yearning to reconnect. There’s a wistful edge to the vocals as they imagine the possibility of a new romantic spark post-lockdown. “Pretending life doesn’t fly past / Almost forgot how to reach out,” they reflect. The arpeggiated bassline and ambient percussion evoke the euphoric anticipation found in the best of 2010s-era Robyn.
Later, “Halfmoon” shifts the mood with darker tones and a more haunting emotional core, offering a moment of melancholy introspection amid the otherwise luminous production.
A Little Lucky is a compact but compelling set of electro-pop gems that are dancefloor-ready, emotionally resonant, and undeniably catchy. Whether you’re here for the hooks or the heartbreak, this EP has something to offer.
