Long time BUST bestie, the artist Swoon (Caldonia Curry), has created her own oracle deck and not only is the art stunning but she has created an entire fairytale world to go along with it. Swoon is known for her street art – elaborate wheatpastes that grace walls all around the world, her junk boat fleets and large scale installations, among various other artistic endeavors. The original art for this 88 card deck was created using woodblocking, painting, paper cuttings, and various other techniques that Swoon often uses in her works (many of the original base art is available on the deck’s kickstarter!)
The deck is based on the Sibylant Sisters fairytale – a tale she explains is based on her childhood “growing up at the end of a dirt road with a mother who was in the midst of a psychotic breakdown, and a lifetime spent teasing out the relationship between creativity, intuition, magic and madness.” The art on each card is based on archetypes and symbols from the story. She is hoping this divination deck will help bring her tale to life, allowing fans to use the deck not only as a tool for personal reflection but as a way to “interact with the Sibylant world in a real and tangible way”. The tale itself is witchy, often silly, often heartbreaking and so detailed you can vividly imagine every cottage and every frog. She reads the full story in the link below and her soothing voice with a slight southern drawl is a magical must. The video features various art works that accompany the story – many of which were the base art for the deck. She describes the fairytale as “her childhood through the eyes of her 6 year old self, struggling to navigate living under the care of a toad-brew addicted witch. In the Sibylant Sisters tale, Caelum and her sister Terra find the magic within themselves to not only survive living with the witch Katarina but to forgive her as well.” The project is a “multi-tier narrative world” which includes immersive installations, a forthcoming feature film, paintings and drawings which “emphasizes healing intergenerational trauma through radical empathy and spiritual renewal” and will help immerse the observer further and further into the story.
