In the ever-evolving landscape of proptech, Piñata stands out for its innovative approach to rental rewards and leadership. In this interview, we explore the experiences, challenges, and vision of Piñata’s founder, Lily Liu, an American Asian woman, highlighting the company’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and financial empowerment.
Can you tell us about the personal experiences or challenges that motivated you to create Piñata and innovate within the proptech industry?
The real estate and proptech industries are traditionally dominated by older white men. As an Asian female entrepreneur, I am motivated by the desire to solve significant problems and inspire others to pursue their dreams. Through Piñata, I hope to influence decision-making tables to become more inclusive.
How does Piñata’s unique perspective, being led by Asian women, influence the way the platform approaches the needs of diverse renters and landlords?
Piñata is dedicated to everyday renters who struggle to make rent each month. Our leadership’s diverse background drives our mission to improve credit, provide rewards, and enhance financial resilience for those who need it most. My own experiences growing up as an Asian woman fuel this passion.
In what ways does Piñata strive to create a more inclusive and equitable renting experience for individuals from marginalized communities?
We focus on hiring a diverse team that is committed to building a more inclusive and equitable world.
As a female founder in the tech industry, what strategies have you employed to navigate potential biases or barriers that may exist within the startup ecosystem, especially in securing funding and building partnerships?
Securing VC funding is particularly challenging for women, especially women of color, with statistics showing they receive less than 10% of funding. Persistence and resilience are crucial in overcoming these barriers.
Can you share some insights into the importance of representation and diversity within the leadership team of Piñata, and how it contributes to the company’s overall mission and vision?
Our leadership team is diverse, with two out of three co-founders being Asian women. Half of our board members are people of color, reflecting a broad range of viewpoints and backgrounds that enhance our mission.
How does Piñata actively support and empower other Asian women who aspire to enter the tech or entrepreneurship space?
While Piñata is focused on high-level execution as a Series A company, I am personally involved in initiatives to support Asian women in tech and entrepreneurship.
What advice would you give to aspiring female founders, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, who are looking to launch their own startups in the tech industry?
Follow your vision with resilience, persistence, and passion. The world opens up for those who have the goods.
Could you share a memorable moment or milestone in your journey with Piñata that highlights the impact of being an Asian woman in leadership? How has this experience shaped your perspective on entrepreneurship and innovation?
One memorable moment was securing Series A funding from Wilshire Lane Capital, led by a Black man with an Asian general partner. This experience was particularly gratifying, showing the importance of diverse financial and strategic partnerships.
Looking ahead, what do you envision for the future of Piñata, both in terms of its growth as a business and its contribution to fostering diversity and inclusion within the proptech industry?
If Piñata becomes an indispensable tool for landlords and renters, we will significantly impact how the world views rent. This success will lift many communities, particularly those most in need.

Meet The New Renter Membership Program That Will Change How The Nation Thinks About Rent
In Partnership with Visa, Piñata Debuts First of its Kind Debit Credit Card – Piñata Pay – Making Paying Rent Rewarding
Piñata, a rental rewards app designed to help users build and establish credit, has just announced an exclusive partnership with Visa, called Piñata Pay, the first no-fee debit payment solution for renters.
With every dollar saved for rent, users can win major giveaway prizes like home theaters or a kitchenware makeover. While spending on rent and other life expenses will earn them cash-back and rewards points.
“It’s a way to access credit card-like rewards without taking on debt, a way to break the cycle of credit card debt,” says Lily Liu, CEO of Piñata. “Users will be building financial health while supercharging all the things renters already love about Piñata.”
After the pilot was launched, renters expressed great enthusiasm about the value proposition. Specifically, 10% of pilot renters have signed up for the platform, funded their accounts with bank transfers and direct deposit, and linked their Piñata Pay accounts to rent and bill payment platforms.
In addition to the new benefits of Piñata Pay, when users pay rent through the app, Piñata confirms and triggers a series of best-in-class perks, exclusive deals, and giveaways. Their unique technology ensures that rent payments are reported to all three major credit bureaus, maximizing a renter’s credit score impact. With free back reporting, renters can enjoy a significant head start on improving their credit history. A higher credit score, achieved through Piñata, can open doors to significant savings on loans and leases, while monthly rewards for everyday expenses provide much-needed financial relief.
The cost of a Piñata membership is just $60 a year, making it the most affordable membership program of its kind. “When you put it into perspective, $60 a year is a low average for credit-building programs–most charge an additional $25 on average for back reporting and don’t offer rewards, deals, or giveaways. Piñata is not a credit card that compounds people’s debt burden; it’s a game-changing membership program made to empower renters,” Liu emphasizes.
Piñata understands that building a financial future is a serious commitment; that’s why they offer yearly rates rather than monthly payments, ensuring a stable and secure path to boosting one’s credit score.
Piñata’s journey, led by Lily Liu, an American Asian woman, is a testament to the power of diversity and inclusion in driving innovation and solving significant societal problems. As Piñata continues to grow, it aims to reshape the rental industry, fostering a more equitable and inclusive environment for all.
