It happened again: another mass shooting. In San Bernardino, California yesterday, a heavily armed man and woman killed at least 14 people and wounded at least 17, according to the New York Times.
As Obama said after a previous mass shooting, “We are the only advanced country on earth that sees these kinds of mass shootings every few months….Somehow this has become routine. The reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine. The conversation in the aftermath of it. We’ve become numb to this.”
It’s even worse than that: mass shootings don’t happen every few months in the US. They happen every single day. Sometimes multiple times a day. Specifically, there have been 355 mass shootings in the US in 2015.
The Washington Post has a chart showing just how often mass shootings occur – defining mass shootings as “incidents in which four or more people, including the gunman, are killed or injured by gunfire.” It’s horrific.
This isn’t okay. This needs to change. If it doesn’t change, it will happen again – soon.
