News flash: women masturbate. And it’s not just for sexual pleasure… it can help reduce the pain of menstrual cramps and improve cardiovascular health. Men have been shown onscreen masturbating for years, yet film and TV makers tend to ignore female sexuality. However, things are starting to change, as more and more TV shows depict scenes of female masturbation in their programs.
The scenes cross all genres. There are scenes meant to be sexy, such as Moria the Maid’s scene from American Horror Story. There are scenes meant to elicit laughs like Big Boo’s various prison masturbation methods from Orange Is The New Black. And then there are scenes meant to depict female masturbation how it often is: sort of awkward, sort of boring and totally normal, like the new Lifetime show, UnREAL, just did with its scenes of Rachel masturbating.
The co-creators of UnREAL, Marti Noxon and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro, spoke to The Huffington Post about the scene and the presence of female masturbation on television. ‘“I think [female masturbation] makes men uncomfortable,” said Noxon. “I think there’s something really scary about the idea that [sex is] not always romantic for us, and that it’s not always about needing a man there to take care of our needs. I think it’s scary for guys to see that, and be confronted with this in-your-face idea of ‘yeah, we’ve got it.’”
Meanwhile, Shapiro doesn’t get why it’s an issue. “‘It’s part of being a healthy person and having a sex drive, and not always relieving it with a partner,” he said. “I don’t actually think it’s a big deal at all. I wrote this episode [and] when I first turned in the script, there were a lot of conversations about, ‘Well, we haven’t established that Rachel’s a sex addict.’ And I was like, ‘Why would masturbating make her a sex addict?’”
As sex becomes less and less taboo in mainstream media, hopefully masturbation, especially female masturbation, will too.
