Kim Shattuck Takes Over the Pixies, The Muffs, and the World

by Mary Grace Garis

With a smudge of red lipstick, thick bleach streaks and sweet babydoll dresses, Kim Shattuck pulls of 1993 well. It’s impressive, considering it’s 2013, AND considering that Kim turns 50 today! Seriously? Seriously. And she’s left us a pretty rock and roll resume for us to stare at, so grab my hand as we take very quick stroll down memory lane.

Kim Shattuck’s career as a fierce musician/badass/deputy mayor of Babetown started back in the 80’s as a member of the kick-ass girl group The Pandoras.

But she’s most famously known for being lead singer and guitarist of a little band you may have heard of called The Muffs. What? You’ve never heard of The Muffs? Have you been living under a rock? WELL. They did that cover of “Kids in America” in the opening scenes of Clueless.

That one. They also played in the season four premiere of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I think only I’ve noticed that. Ever.

In any case, they’re a scrappy, punky band and Shattuck’s little girl voice with it’s more-grating growl is a treat. I power-downloaded their eponymous debut CD and “Blonder and Blonder” several months back and ended up drinking beer and thrashing around my (empty) basement apartment all night. It’s good music for…those situations. Very angry, in a way that’s almost adorable.

And that’s not all! Now Kim Shattuck is set to take up Kim Deal’s (another lady love of mine) place in the Pixie’s for their upcoming European tour. Personally, I’ve never been asked to join the Pixies, but I assume this is a really big honor.

Currently The Muffs are set to stop by The Bell House in Brooklyn July 26th, COINCIDENTALLY the day after we host our 20th Anniversary Party! So if you’re in the neighborhood, I feel like seeing them would be a good life choice to make.

Happy birthday, Kim! Here’s to another half-century of rocking!
