Tomorrow, August 26th, marks a big day in Herstory, and I’m not talking about the births of the Velvet Underground’s Maureen Tucker or Garbage’s Shirley Manson, though I’ll be sure to raise a glass for them as well. Tomorrow historians and feminists celebrate the 90th anniversary of national women’s suffrage and the official recognition of the 19th amendment by the state. In honor of the movement and Women’s Equality Day the Anthony Center for Women’s Leadership will be launching a website dedicated to women political pioneers of New York State. The site will be the first of its kind, providing personal accounts for these groundbreaking women and their surviving relatives. The site will also act as a searchable database for all information about the first women elected to New York State’s government. The launch will commence tomorrow at 3 p. m. and can be accessed by visiting www.rochester.edu/sba. Bellow Nora Bredes, director of the Anthony Center, talks a little bit about the inspiration behind the website and why it is so important we recognize these women and all they have done to shape the face of modern politics.
