7 Year Bitch Releases Newest Album In 20 Years

by Anastasia K Zimitravich

Existing for a name-appropriate yet short-lived seven years during the heyday of 90s riot grrrl, 7 Year Bitch reunites to release an uncovered live album from 1996. Recorded at Seattle’s Club Moe, the album features twelve tracks of raunchy, gravelly grunge, adding a fourth album to the band’s sparse discography. Held in a vault for 20 years, Live at Moe was recorded by late guitarist/sound engineer Lisa Faye Beatty, who died in 2011 after a motorcycle accident. Selene Vigil-Wilk, 7YB’s lead singer sees Live at Moe as a tribute, the second tribute album in the collection after 1994’s Viva Zapata!, in honor of the band’s deceased guitarist, Stefanie Sargent.

Stacked amongst contemporaries, L7, Babes in Toyland and Jack Off Jill, 7 Year Bitch was heavy, no-bullshit punk. Live at Moe provides a documentation of their intensity, their inescapable rage and undeniable, blood-curdling sludge. Featured is a live version of “Miss Understood,” taken from their final album, 1996’s Gato Negro. The track describes a woman who isn’t taking anyone’s shit, which has societal consequences. We just can’t handle a woman who knows who she is. “We sounded really rad,” admits Vigil-Wilk during a Billboard interview, “I heard it and thought, ‘man, we kicked ass.’”  Slated for release on Jan. 15, 2016, 7 Year Bitch says not to count on a reunion tour, but don’t count one out either.
