7 “Blurred Lines” Parodies to Restore Your Faith in Humanity

by Brenda Pitt

Like many others, we were shocked and appalled by Robin Thicke and Pharrell’s “Blurred Lines.” As the song’s title suggests, the song contains concerning lyrics that blur the very clear divide between consensual sex and abuse: New York Magazine’s Ann Friedman explains that “phrases like ‘good girl’ and ‘I know you want it’ uttered in rapid succession [sound rapey].” The song stirred up more controversy when Thicke release a totally ridiculous and pretty degrading music video that showcases nearly naked women in nude thongs prancing about and humping things (including Thicke and a dead dog).

Luckily, we have seven parodies of this song and video to make us hopeful about the future of man and womankind once again. These parodies draw attention to the truly disturbing nature of Thicke’s work, spreading plenty of wit and humor along the way.

This Mod Carousel parody, in which the male body is objectified as the female body is in the original video, is totally shocking and eyeopening. The balloons are also the best. So, so funny.

This video, entitled Lame Lines, showcases Melinda Hughes’s songwriting talent with line parodies like “You think I want it/ I really don’t want it/ Please get off it/ You’re a douchebag.” At once point, she hits a dancer with a giant penis and writes the words, “Melinda has a big vag” in balloons. Priceless.

This parody by Law Revue is equal parts hilarious and insightful. These law students clearly know the law, and their references to it are subtle and insightful. My personal favorite is “You can’t just grab me/ That is a sex crime”

Here, Bart Baker makes a truly terrifying (if cartoonish and funny) parody that completely exposes the depth of the abusive implications of the song. At one point, a woman tells Thicke that she is pregnant with his child, and the implication is that he has raped her. Trigger warning: this video contains allusions to sexual abuse.

Rozzi Peters is British, super cute, and probably my favorite. She confronts Thicke with humor and style, playing with her fringe blouse and munching on an eclair throughout.

Blurred Dicks is exactly what it sounds like. Take a look for yourself.

Nerd Lines, below, tells the hilarious story of a nerd wooing the woman of his dreams and includes plenty of sweater vests, glasses, and high socks.

Do you have any parodies you’d like to share? What are your thoughts on “Blurred Lines?”
