I recently moved to a tiny apartment in Brooklyn, and I had to leave more than half my wardrobe at home in Tennessee. It’s been a rough reality because I absolutely love clothes. With fall, my favorite fashion season, approaching, I’ve been worried about how I’m going to stay stylin’ with a significantly reduced collection of clothing. It’s not quite time for me to beg my parents to send me my winter clothes and figure out where to store my short-shorts, so I decided to find a way to make my limited wardrobe stretch into the next few months. After some experimenting, I quickly found that it’s all about adding small accessories. Here’s what I came up with:
High-Wasted Shorts with Tights:
I love me some high-wasted jean shorts. I think they’re flattering and have a lot of personality. In the summer, they’re a great casual item for a trip to the beach or a baseball game. They’re also flirty and keep you super cool when paired with a cropped top in the hot summer months. For an edgier look more suitable for a chilly fall breeze, those high-wasted jean shorts can be paired with a nice pair of black tights. Wearing your favorite closed-toed summer flats or sneakers and adding a brown belt seamlessly bring this summer favorite into fall. For an even more fun take on this look, consider using patterned tights.
Sundress Over Blouse
We all know sundresses are a summer must, but they seem like an item that needs to be quickly retired after the Labor Day cookouts end. Well, think again. Throwing those cute printed dresses over a crisp white blouse or even a long-sleeved tee can get you even more wear out of this summer staple. Mixing a fall-patterned top with your typical summer sundress can also be a funky take on this look.
Dress with Oversized Sweater
Another way to squeeze a little more time out of your favorite dresses is to put them underneath an oversized sweater. These sweaters are comfy and cozy and definitely bring out a fall feel. They have become a popular item and can be found for fairly cheap at places like Forever 21. This is a great transitional piece because you can continue to wear it with pants and tights when the weather really turns cold.
Knee Socks and Infinity Scarves With Your Favorite Skirt or Dress
Knee socks are a key item for early fall. Knee socks can be a super sexy way to keep warm, while still showing a little skin. For more fun, you can experiment with different lengths like thigh-high and layer with boots. Extra coziness can be found when you throw an infinity scarf over your favorite dress. Both knee socks and scarves, especially when bought in neutral colors, can be used with every dress or skirt in your closet.
The best thing to keep in mind when stretching a limited wardrobe into fall: always mix and match. All the accessories listed above (tights, brown belt, scarves, oversized sweaters, knee socks, blouses, and long sleeve tees) can be used in a countless number of combinations. Each can be mixed in with skirts, dresses, and shorts, you just have to be creative. The most important things are that you feel cute, stay true to your personal style, and stay warm. Good luck!
