3 Sweet, Simple Ways to Make Your Own Conditioner

by Laurel Walsh

Homemade conditioners are tricky business. It’s all about oils – keeping your hair nourished and rich without getting too slimy. We’ve scooped up our top three recipes for handmade hair conditioners; easy, all-natural, and animal-product free for all you crafty veganistas!

1) Green Tea Handmade Conditioner

Love green tea? With this recipe, green tea leaves can help you have the sweetest smelling hair in all the land. How cool is that?

You will need:

  • Vitamin E oil
  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Xanthan gum
  • Water + Green Tea Leaves

You just make the tea, mix it with the oils, whisk it with the Xanthan gum (which acts as an emulsifier), strain the clumps, bottle, and enjoy!

2) Vegan Hair Mayo Deep Conditioner

Putting mayonnaise on your head might not sound like the best idea, but this recipe from Lavishly Natural promises silky-soft results.

You will need:

  • 1/2 cup grapeseed or coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice (or apple cider vinegar)
  • 1 tbsp honey

Mix the oil, milk and honey together in a blender until smooth.  Slowly add the lemon juice as the mix thickens. That’s it! The recipe even offers the bonus tip you didn’t know you wanted: adding sea salt makes it taste nice.

3) Easy Peasy Apple Cider Deep Conditioner

Dry hair, empty cabinets, no time?  This ultra-simple two ingredient conditioner is ideal. Keep apple cider vinegar on hand for days when you’d rather stay in than go buy pre-made stuffs. Who cares what the rest of you looks like – that hair is GORGEOUS.

  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (raw is best)
  • 1 cup distilled water

Just shake ‘em up together in a clean bottle, rub the mix into your roots, leave it for a minute, then rinse it out. Your hair will not smell like vinegar, but it will be soft and clean. This recipe’s site  also offers advice about which oils to add depending on your hair type, and other tweaks to this basic recipe that can help you make your own customized conditioning cocktail.
