10 Reasons Why We Love Leslie Jones

by Robyn Smith

This Friday marks the opening of the much-hyped Ghostbusters reboot, which has already received a glowing New York Times review. To celebrate, we wanted to celebrate one of the film’s breakout stars—Leslie Jones. Jones, a cast member of Saturday Night Live and all-around awesome lady, has given us so many reasons to love her. From her hilarious sketches to her unmatched flirtation skills, we can’t get enough of her!

Check out our top 10 reasons below:

1. She failed a few times before she made it big:

“I just knew that I was funny, and I knew that it was just a matter of time,” she told ELLE. “I didn’t know what was going to actually happen—this is definitely way bigger than I thought—but I knew there was no way I was going to be that funny and nobody was going to notice it.”

2. She’s not afraid to take her shoes off:

“I had 22 f–king outfits on today. Jimmy Kimmel had on one f–king suit,” she complained, according to ELLE. “I can’t move in this [outfit], trying to be cute. You’re going to see some bra straps.” As she peeled off her jacket, Jones added, “Let me take these shoes off, too. Size 12.”

3. She knows that you can chase your dreams at any age:

At age 47, she became the oldest cast member to join SNL

4. She doesn’t stand for bullshit:

In a feature in the New Yorker, writer Andrew Marantz says: “An SNL audition is notoriously tough: the studio is dark and cavernous, and the producers sit silently near the back. Jones recalled, ‘I got onstage, took the mike out of the stand, and went, ‘Nope. Y’all are gonna have to move up to where I can see you.’ And Lorne got his ass up and moved.’”

5. She speaks her mind:

At a comedy club with Marantz, “At one point, the reactionary pundit Ann Coulter stopped by their table. Wilmore was courteous, but Jones leaned across the table and stage-whispered, ‘What the fuck is this frightening bitch doing here?’ Coulter’s face froze in a rictus, and she soon backed away from the table.”

6. She isn’t afraid to stand up for herself:

“If you call me a name, I’m gon’ call you a name back. I don’t care how famous I am or how popular I am,” she says on Late Night with Seth Meyers, “If you call me a gorilla, I’m gon’ call yo’ mama one.”

7. No one flirts like Leslie flirts:

8. And it’s obviously working on Colin Jost, who has a natural chemistry with her on SNL’s Weekend Update segment.

    9. She looked INCREDIBLE in a Christian Siriano gown after other designers refused to dress her. It was made for her, and now it’s iconic:

“My mission now is what we’re calling that ‘everywoman,'” Siriano told NY Mag last February. “You can be any size, any age, and wear something from our collection, and that’s so important to me.”

    10. She’s not afraid to challenge the status quo, whether it’s fashion, or racism.

“I believe that the craziest…most wrong statement that can be made is, ‘That’s just how it is,” the actress told E! News. “That’s just gonna kill us. There’s no such thing as that. Stop accepting that. It’s not just the way it is. Say something.”
