It’s finally summertime! Looking for the kind of fun you can have without sweating your tanned little booty off? BUST hand-picked a crop of movies we’ll be watching from that sweet, sweet movie theater air conditioning – without stressing about which character will make the next sexist dig.
We know that dick flicks usually dominate the summer movie scene, but 2013 is another good year for the ladies. Here are the ones you don’t want to miss:
Girl Most Likely
Kristen Wiig plays Imogene, a “once-promising playwright” now living with her estranged mother while having a total nervous breakdown. Sounds dark, right? But have no fear, this baby will also be heartwarming and eye-pleasing judging by the cast (Matt Dillon, Darren Criss!) and the trailer. Out July 19!
The To Do List
Aubrey Plaza, Alia Shawkat, Rachel Bilson, Donald Glover, Andy Samberg, and Connie Britton?! Whew. I’m sold. The film centers around former BUST cover girl Aubrey, whose character wants to shed her uptight image in the summer before college. Get ready to party like it’s 1993, ’cause this one’s out next month on July 26.
The Bling Ring
Sofia Coppola directs this gem, featuring Emma Watson as a fame-obsessed teenager whose crew robs celeb homes in L.A. couture. Smarter than Spring Breakers, this valley kid gang tracks celebrity whereabouts by keeping tabs on paparazzi coverage. And it’s based on true events! Who knew. Get ready by watching the trailer and reading the Vanity Fair article that inspired the film. Out June 14!
The Hot Flashes
Holla Susan Seidelman! She directs Brooke Shields, Daryl Hannah, and Wanda Sykes as they play former basketball champs who hook up to form a new b-ball team and challenge the current high school state winners. They then blow up into media sensations, as rad middle-aged women are wont to do. Hilarious and a little bit steamy. What else would you expect from Seidelman? In theatres July 12.
Violet and Daisy
Keeping up with the sweet-teen-starlets-turned-girl-criminals trend, Alexis Bledel and Saiorse Ronan star as young assassins with a challenging hit. So dark and dreamy! Out June 7.
Austenland
Love Jane Austen but not the melodramatic remakes and overwrought Austen-esque TV specials? (I’m looking at you, Becoming Jane.) Kerri Russell plays a woman obsessed with Pride and Prejudice, who goes to a Jane Austen Theme Park (!) in search of her Mr. Darcy. Oh, and Jennifer Coolidge plays a character named “Miss Elizabeth Charming.” Yes please. Out August 16.
In a World…
Indie newcomer Lake Bell writes, directs, and stars in this film about a vocal coach with dreams of becoming a voice-over superstar. She needs to deal with her dysfunctional family and good ol’ sexism along the way, so unfortunately her path isn’t a smooth one. And the film’s so new it doesn’t even have a trailer yet! But it features Geena Davis, Ron Swans-ahem…Nick Offerman, and other favourites, so you know it’s gonna be good. Out sometime this summer – stay tuned!
The Lifeguard
I hadn’t heard of Liz W. Garcia before today, but geez is she a sharp lady. Garcia directs this summer release, featuring Kristen Bell as a valedictorian-turned-reporter who goes back to her hometown to find the happiness she’s lost, and ends up with a lifeguarding job and a teenage beau. Err. There’s no trailer yet (in theatres August 30), but you can hear Garcia talk about the movie here:
Much Ado About Nothing
Joss Whedon, Buffy’s visionary, releases this reworked-Shakespeare classic on Friday. It’s a sleek and subdued black and white version of the classic rom-com. Cooler yet, he gender-bends some of his casting and has the character of Conrade played by a woman. Whedon is known for telling stories with strong female characters, so let’s hope there’s more of that in this flick. Out June 7!
Secret Disco Revolution
You can add disco to your radical feminist toolbox, according to this summer doc. It’s about the birth of disco in the 1970s, framing the dance form as a key contributor to the gay rights movement and black liberation/women’s lib movements of the time. I could get down with that. This one comes out June 29.
