10 Lady Podcasts You Should Tune Into (And A New Festival That Brings Them Together!)

by Natasha Rodriguez

While woman-hosted podcasts still don’t get nearly as much recognition as we’d like them to, things are looking up: Next month, WNYC will be having its first-ever Women’s Podcast festival called “Werk It: How to Be a Grown Ass Podcaster.” On June 4th and 5th, the nation’s top female podcast hosts and producers will gather to discuss and workshop the future of podcast content creation. If you haven’t been listening to any female-backed podcasts, here are 10 amazing ones you should really be tuning in for.

On June 4th, critically-acclaimed comedian Sara Schaefer (host of WNYC and Nerdist’s podcast Lies) will host a night of hilarious, honest discussion on stepping it up in life. She will be joined by actress and Daily Show comedian Jessica Williams, Heather Havrilesky of New York Magazine‘s existential advice column, Ask Polly, and Katja Blichfield from the popular web series High Maintenance. They’ll share their seminal stories about growing up before opening up the floor to the audience for a Q&A. Purchase your tickets here

Then, on June 5th, WNYC will be hosting BuzzFeed‘s Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton for a live taping of their hit new podcast Another Round. They’ll discuss race, feminism and pop culture over a few drinks, and then interview Roxane Gay, the critically-acclaimed author of Bad Feminist about her experience as a black feminist working in academic institutions dominated by white intelligentsia. This event really matters: In 2014, the Women’s Media Center reported that gender inequality among journalists is present in all media outlets. Currently, men receive 63% of the byline credits in print, Internet and wire news. If you check out iTunes’ top 100 podcasts, only 15 of them are hosted by women. This makes us sad because there are currently so many fabulous ladies that have smart, insightful and funny podcasts. We can’t wait for this event and we hope that it will shed some light on the power of women-hosted podcasts.
