NBC announced on Tuesday morning that Hoda Kotb would be replacing Matt Lauer as co-anchor of the network’s morning show, Today. Kotb had temporarily replaced Lauer after he was fired in November over sexual harassment allegations, reports the New York Times. The combined team of Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, the other anchor of Today, will be the first time that two women will be the show’s official main hosts. Guthrie welcomed Kotb to the show Tuesday morning. “This has to be the most popular decision NBC News...
In case you have been too busy building your nuclear fallout shelter to keep up with the good things that are happening in pop culture, BUST is here to tell you that the reigning queens of comedy, Pheobe Robinson and Jessica Williams, are bestowing upon us mere plebeians the ultimate winter gift: a 2 Dope Queens four-part comedy special set to air on HBO beginning on February 2nd. That’s right. You will be able to watch 8 hours of the “dopest queens to ever queen...
Upon Amazon’s cancellation of Good Girls Revolt, I was pretty peeved. Aside from Transparent (which is its own bag of worms — an article for another time), it seemed like the company didn’t really care about creating content for the large demographic of female viewers. But now, Amazon has gifted us with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The show, starring Rachel Brosnahan as the title character of Miriam (Midge) Maisel, is about a housewife in the 1950s who pursues comedy following a nasty breakup with her husband. As...
Comedian Jay Pharoah moves on from SNL with his own show, White Famous Despite having achieved things by the age of 30 that most comics will only ever dream about—a six-season stint on Saturday Night Live and his own Showtime series, White Famous—Jay Pharoah is one humble dude. That is, until he talks about his famous impressions. “There’s not one I haven’t perfected,” he says proudly of his status as the reigning king of imitation. In fact, long before the Virginia native made a name for...
This week on Broad City, Abbi and Ilana celebrate another anniversary of their friendship. On Abbi and Ilana's giant faces: Lindsay: Abbi has an Ilana body pillow. Who would you get a body pillow of? Danielle: Bruce Springsteen. Or Bruce Springsteen’s dog. Lindsay: What does his dog look like? Danielle: I dunno. Lindsay: It’s not a body pillow! It’s just a giant face! Danielle: Why is she bringing the giant face? Lindsay: I don’t know, but I love it. During a commercial break: Lindsay: Hold on, I have to control my dogs. Ugh, I stepped...
This weekend, Saoirse Ronan hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time in her career. Among the many highlights, she joined the women of SNL to sing a fun, cute song about some things that are not so fun and cute. In just three minutes, “Welcome to Hell” offers a crash course (and maybe, to some, a wake-up call) on the history of powerful men harassing and then silencing women. Dressed in metallic pinks and purples, Ronan, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant, and Kate McKinnon lick lollipops,...
If you’re all caught up on Jane the Virgin, you know that in season three, Jane fulfills her lifelong dream of becoming a published author, getting a book deal for a romance novel based on her love story with her dear departed husband, Michael. (In before "HEY SPOILERS" — that episode aired ten months ago and if you want to avoid spoilers, you should watch TV in a timely manner!! RIP Michael, though.) awww   In season four, that book gets published, with a cover designed by her...
In the latest episode of Broad City, Abbi and Ilana deal with every city-dweller's worst nightmare: bedbugs. Recappers Danielle and Lindsay react: When Abbi and Ilana were diving in their convertible: Danielle: They’re coming back from Florida!Lindsay: This is the first episode that’s bled into another episode.Danielle: I guess that’s right… Isn’t it too cold to have the top down? Lindsay: If you have it, you do it.Danielle: Driving in New York sucks.Lindsay: That’s how I felt when I moved to Philly.Danielle: Yeah, everywhere you go you...
Borderline personality disorder, despite entering the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1980 and affecting 1.6% of the population each year, is a condition that is still not very well understood. Much of the medical community agrees that BPD isn’t even a particularly good name for the disorder. Its causes are unclear, but the symptoms include an extreme fear of abandonment, distorted self-image, intense emotional reactions, impulsive behavior, unstable relationships, and self-harm. And for some reason, I gravitated towards two dramatic portrayals of...
This piece discusses suicide and contains spoilers for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Whenever I used to try and describe suicidal ideation, I always found myself at a loss for words. How can a person not suffering understand what it’s like to rather be dead than alive when their life is seemingly normal? It has become much easier for me to expound on those thoughts since my actual attempt. I was sitting in my private bathroom, my back against the cold porcelain toilet. I had tears coming out of my eyes,...
