voices of JemAs a child of the 80's, it was common for my friends and I to debate on who was cooler: Jem and the Holograms or Barbie and the Rockers. While it becomes a close tie when faced with the glittery makeup and neon clothing, the sugary sweet pop-rock tunes, and the explosive hairstyles, I'm thinking Jem may have outdone Barbie on one important factor: her voice. Jem's character was made up of not one, but two rocking ladies. Samantha Newark provided her speaking voice, and the ultra-cool Britta Phillips lent her golden pipes as Jem's singing voice. You probably recognize Britta from her days playing bass in the indie-pop group Luna, and if you haven't already, check out her latest project with husband (and former Luna bandmate) Dean Wareham called Dean and Britta. Sorry Barbie, but I think Jem just threw the smack down on the cool points.
