As Told By Ginger

Have you heard the rumors? Supposedly, As Told By Ginger is coming back to Nickelodeon in 2017. In the late '90s and early 2000s, I lived and breathed Nicktoons, and As Told By Ginger was a super important one. My older sister and I tuned in every Sunday evening to watch Ginger and her friends navigate the very tough world of middle school. I was still in elementary school at the time, but Ginger gave me a glimpse into a world that I would soon enter and warned me of the challenges ahead. And thank god she did because I faced them all from begging my mom to let me shave my legs (AKA my fizzy lizzies — a term my sister and I still use regularly today) to drama with the popular blonde girls who I desperately wanted to be friends with. I had long, unrequited crushes and struggled to cling to my childhood while my friends seemed to easily move into young adulthood (See Macie as Little Seal Girl).

I’m so glad that Ginger might be coming back to Nickelodeon universe because so few shows are honest about how EFFING HARD middle school and early high school are for girls. Best friends fight and grow apart, people make up rumors about you and talk about you behind your back, and even you can easily slip into the role of mean girl. The show also tackled even more serious issues like depression, socioeconomic status, and death, which is pretty uncommon for a cartoon. I am still eternally greatful to Ginger, Dodie, and Macie for giving me a heads up of what was to come and for showing that I wasn't alone, and I would surely survive. I'm hopeful that girls in 2017 will get the same from Ginger and her gang of gal pals.

According to MoviePilot, Nickelodeon is working with the show's original creator Emily Kapnek and the production team behind hit Nick shows like Rugrats, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, and The Wild Thornberrys. This is all yet to be confirmed, but it's an exciting prospect. MoviePilot also wrote that the new As Told By Ginger will continue from where the original show dropped off in season 3 but will be alterned slightly for Nickelodeon's current audience. Until we know if this is for real, you can find me watching reruns of Ginger on YouTube and praising my gods that I got out of middle school alive.
