TV

In Part I of Shaming Famewhores I discussed going on the reality TV dating show Frank the Entertainer…In a Basement Affair, currently on Vh1, as a performance art piece. I performed as myself rather than as a typical wacky performance artist in hopes to deny what I believed was production’s expectations of me. I also went on the show to do research on the stereotyping machine that is reality television. To do so, I needed to challenge my own assumptions about...
Okay.  I love this commercial.  I've watched it a million times and still laugh every time he says, "I'm on a horse."  And then it ends, and I feel like a bad feminist because there's no getting around the fact that the entire thing is based on gender stereotypes. Ahem: "Sadly, your man isn't me- but if he stopped using lady scented body wash he could smell like me."  "It's an oyster with two tickets to that THING you love." "Look again, the tickets are now DIAMONDS!" "Anything is...

She overcame injury and struck gold! On Wednesday in the women's downhill event, Lindsey Vonn of the USA beat her competition by .56 seconds to become the top of the tops. Vonn was unsure of competing due to shin bruises. The silver and bronze winners were Julia Mancuso (USA) and Elisabeth Görgl (Austria) respectively. You go, girls! In the first episode of our new series for BUST TV, we get to hang out and chat with the brilliant Tracey Ullman over some knitting. Liz Armstrong talks to Tracey about some of the characters she's developed for the new season of her Showtime series, Tracey Ullman's State of the Union. While Laura Bush, Arianna Huffington, Rachel Maddow, Christiane Amanpour, and Ruth Madoff all in one room together would already make for fun viewing,  Tracey manages to contain them all within a single person...
[video: New Law Requires Women To Name Baby, Paint Nursery Before Getting Abortion 425x344] Hilarious but scarily too realistic.  Already there are laws that force doctors to show women an ultrasound before they can undergo the procedure (Kentucky's trying to pass that law right now.)  And currently a pregnant Iowa woman is being jailed for trying to murder her fetus after she fell down the stairs, voluntarily went to the hospital out of concern for the fetus, and while she was there admitted to the hospital...

A bit of bad news today: Lindsey Vonn, one of the US Olympic ski team’s most talked-about athletes, said today at a press conference that she has a bruised shin, which may prevent her from competing in her sport, alpine skiing, at the Vancouver Games next week. She said she’ll be back on skis tomorrow for the first time since last Wednesday, when her injury occurred. Vonn has had some controversial press coverage lately—a recent profile of her from the New York Times magazine which Feministing.com...

Tim Tebow's anti-choice Super Bowl commercial might be getting all the attention, but I needed a second pass at this Snickers ad featuring Betty White.  Not bad for someone who just celebrated their 88th birthday! [video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3rsaneyeXY 425x344] ...
The Super Bowl is, historically, one of the most-watched events in American television each year. Folks gather far and wide to watch the AFC and the NFC champs duke it out. Although really, the Super Bowl is more about two very very important things: one being food (just writing this so far has made me crave queso dip and pigs in a blanket...) and the other being good old American capitalism via commercial-watching. We've all seen the entertaining ads with cat herders and Mean Joe...
I'd just like to nerd out for a minute and talk about the fact that the final season of Lost premiered last night -- I can't be the only BUST reader who's obsessed, right? Don't worry, I'm not gonna spoil it for anybody who hasn't had the chance to watch those two hours of glorious, crazy, WTF-is-going-on television yet, but I would like to take a moment to appreciate the totally awesome ladies who appear on that show. Seriously, can you think of any other...

From her cinema debut in Real Women Have Curves to her TV takeover as  Ugly Betty, America Ferrera has built a career on playing the most relatable female characters in pop culture today. Here, she talks with her close friend and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants costar, Amber Tamblyn. When was the moment that you felt like you knew you were going to do something big, regardless of how  people treated you? I think the first time I felt that moment was when I was seven...
