New York-based fashion stylist Kelly Augustine believes fashion can be liberating. "People treat fashion like it’s very frivolous, and it’s not," she says. "How I’m treated as a Black person very much depends on how I’m dressed. Even as a fat woman, if you don’t wear shapewear, people are going to assume that you’re sloppy and it’s like, 'Maybe I just want to breathe tonight.'" That's why she's dedicated to taking a stand for who she is. "There’s liberation [in fashion], and I love what’s happening with Black designers [who’re saying], 'I want to wear gold fronts and rollers in my hair.'
