Sure, wandering the aisles of endless beauty products at Sephora can be super fun. But also sometimes overwhelming (and expensive). Luckily, you can also wander the aisles at your local farmers’ market or health food store and get a similar result. Certain fruits, veggies, and spices can replace your standard mascara, blush, lip stain, and brow filler, which means you can ditch the chemicals and grab your beauty prods straight from the garden. Plus, you’ll feel like a total makeup MacGyver.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
One blackberry (I like to use a frozen blackberry and leave it out to defrost, it creates a great juice that’s easy to use)
Pinch of spirulina powder
Pinch of carob powder
First, take one end of your Q-tip and make it smaller by pulling some of the cotton off. Tightly twist the remaining cotton. Have your blackberry and spirulina and carob powders ready in a small dish. To create the first layer of mascara, dip the tightened end of your Q-tip into the blackberry juice (if your berry’s not naturally juicy, you can poke and smash it with your Q-tip). Once it’s soaked, apply it as you would regular mascara.
Next, to create a lip and cheek stain, slice a thin, half-moon piece of beet. Dab it on to your lips, layering as much as you want until you reach your desired color. Take the same slice and run it across each of your cheekbones, until it leaves a rosy hue you’re satisfied with. If your slice of beet starts to dry out, you can bite it and use the new edge to create more juice/color.
To fill in your eyebrows, dip your Q-tip in the blackberry juice again and mix it with a little bit of carob and spirulina powder, creating a dark brown juicy paste. Submerge your Q-tip into the mixture and start filling in your brows as you normally would. Blend and wipe any excess off using the other end of your Q-tip. Use that same color mixture as a second layer of mascara. Ta-da! Your face now looks fresh af and you can even eat the leftovers.
