NYC Dyke March This Saturday!

by Krista Ciminera

Like Lollapalooza, Woodstock, and all good organized events, Pride Month has gotten so corporate. The line-up for PrideFest has such cringe-worthy events like PETCO’s PetPride, so leave it to the dykes to keep the spice in all things gay with the 18th annual Dyke March this Saturday, June 26th.

Dyke March officially started in 1993 by the Lesbian Avengers as a protest march against the largely white and male focus of Pride Month and Pride events. The march organizers do not seek out permits for the march and maintain it as a political event. Dyke March has a very grass-roots feel and acts as a reminder of where and why these kinds of marches started in the first place.

The march starts at 5pm at Bryant Park and ends at Washington Square Park. It is open to all self-identified women, and men are encouraged to cheer on the marchers from the sidewalks. Now is the time to put your thinking-caps on to come up with a witty dyke-slogan before tomorrow afternoon!
