Smoke Fairies’ first full-length U.S. release is out today, June 14! Best friends since childhood, this British duo have created a truly fantastical experience on Through Low Light and Trees. Understated yet powerful, the album is filled with strong American folk and blues influences.
The album’s opening track, Summer Fades, features the two ladies’ gorgeous voices as they converge to welcome the listener to their mystical world; it is by far my favorite track. It also provides the poetic lyrics from which the title of the album derived. Erie Lackawanna is moodier, and with the raw emotion in the lines, “I can see a wrecking ball coming for the house/ See a wrecking ball gonna tear it down,” give me chills. Jewel may be an outdated reference, but Morning Blues reminds me an awful lot of her song Near You Always.
The pair get sassier on Strange Moon Rising, which has the twangy-est, most Western feel on the album. The enchanting cover art appears to come from the imagery of this darkly beautiful video:
