The ‘Broad City’ Surprise That You’ve Been Waiting For Is Almost Here

by Devon Preston

If you were left raw and writhing after the season three finale of Broad City, don’t worry, because you weren’t alone. For the past three seasons of the hit Comedy Central series, Ilana Wexler and Abbi Abrams have captivated audiences with their over-the-top antics. From using period pants to smuggling weed through airport security, to hurling goodie baskets with Kelly Ripa from her posh Manhattan apartment, to even accidentally running into Hillary Clinton herself, these funny ladies of the silver screen always manage to keep viewers hard up for fresh content. Which is why many of you are probably dying to know what Ilana and Abbi will get themselves into in the highly anticipated fourth season.

And while fans will have to wait until early 2017 for new episodes of show to be released, we do have good news for those who can’t wait until the year is up for more of Broad City. Actors Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson have teamed up with the show’s musical supervisor, Matt FX Feldman (who has also worked to create the music for the third series of Channel 4’s Skins as well as it’s US reboot) to create the comedy’s first ever original soundtrack. Fans may not recognize every artist on the soundtrack by name, however, it is safe to say that the eclectic blend of tracks lends itself to the quirky and unfiltered nature of Broad City itself.

As many of you may know, Broad City first began as a web series but then was picked up two years later by Comedy Central. Much of the show’s cast and crew were relatively unknown at the time, which meant that Felder had a limited music budget to play with.”When I first started working on the show, our resources were so low to the point where working with unsigned and unknown artists was the only way we could possibly afford to score an entire episode the way we wanted,” says Feldman in an interview with Rolling Stone. Although the show today has come a long way from an online indulgence, it continues to stick to its undeniably unique brand and many argue that the quirkiness is one of the many reasons that the show has become such an incredibly successful program. That being said, if the characters of Ilana and Abbi are going to continue to invade our minds with their off-kilter impressions of New York City living infused with heaps laugh-out-loud comedy, it only makes sense that the soundtrack will be just as authentic as the show’s stars.

The soundtrack will kick off with “Latino N Proud,” DJ Raff’s now iconic title theme song and feature tracks “YES Bitch” by K Rizz, “#NotYours” by Scooter Island (aka Matt FX Felder featuring Junglepussy), “Marijuana” by Zebra Katz & Kashaka, along with 8 other audio accompaniments to the show. The soundtrack will be release digitally as well as on vinyl, which will be sold exclusively through Urban Outfitters and include a step-by-step joint rolling guide illustrated by Mike Perry, who is also responsible for creating the psychedelic title sequences for the show.

The soundtrack will be produced by Milan Records/Comedy Central Records and will be available for purchase on October 28, 2016. And even though everyone is still in the dark on when the fourth season will premiere and we haven’t heard about whether Val will be making an appearance on the album, we can say almost for certain that the Broad City soundtrack is the perfect mix of songs for strutting around BB&B with your best friend.
