Lizz Winstead, creator of The Daily Show and recently featured in BUST Magazine‘s June/July issue, will read from her collection of essays Lizz Free or Die tonight, as part of the Brooklyn Bridge Park’s summer reading series.
Winstead’s collection of essays is an account of her life, which has been influenced by sexism and her struggles against it. BUST’s review of the work states “as a child, a priest infuriates her when he tells her she can’t be an altar boy; as a young stand-up comic, she’s equally infuriated by her crowds’ sudden disinterest in her observational humor when her set-ups go from ‘Ever notice…’ to the more authoritative ‘I think that…’”
This lady is also an amazing social activist. As she told MINNPOST, “…And when I started doing these benefits for Planned Parenthood, I would go to these towns—and I’m not talking about liberal cities; I’m talking, like, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Cincinnati and Pittsburgh — and hundreds and hundreds of women would come out because they knew what was at stake.”
The reading will take place tonight at Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier One, 42 Furman Avenue. The summer reading series will continue next Monday when Jim Shepard and others read for “Short Story Night”, then Patti Smith is coming up on August 6th, and Martin Amis on the 13th
