Living

Somehow Ben Milne, a baker in Scotland, found a way to create a  delicious, edible 7 inch of his friends' band, Found, made entirely of chocolate and edible paper. After experimenting with chocolate on vinyl and homemade templates, Milne contacted the band's record label, who gave him a vinyl press of his own to create this musical sweetness. Apparently it plays on all record players, which is pretty neat, but I'm not sure how many times I'd be able to play it before eating it!  To check out...

I miss my dog. I haven’t seen Itchy, my family’s 14 year-old lhasa-poo, since I left Ontario in April. You know what would be great? If I could carry around a memento of her all of the time that would remind me of her cuddly softness, her twitchy whiskers, her cold wet nose… And finally that day has come. Artist Jackie Kaufman’s custom pet-nose print necklaces allow this kind of pet-to-owner long-distance intimacy that you can carry close to your heart all day long. The pendant...

We’re real proud to announce that we have a big, fat, new book coming out this fall. It’s called The BUST DIY Guide to Life and will be published by STC Craft/A Melanie Falick Book (which is a division of Abrams) and it’s kind of a big deal! The book includes a bunch of past articles on crafts, and fun ideas for things to do, (over 250) and also features some brand spankin’ new material. Organized by category—beauty and health, fashion, food and entertaining, career,...
We're superexcited about the upcoming fourth of July holiday. Okay, we admit that's more because it's a three-day weekend and an excuse for a fun backyard party than because of its origins as an important national holiday. Either way, it's a great way day to celebrate your own independent spirit by crafting or cooking up some fun red white and blue items. Here are some great ideas scavenged from around the interwebs: Free printables make for quick and cute sparkler table decorations, from Twig and Thistle. These...

Next stop on my quest to learn to can is a lesson in rhubarb jam making. Rhubarb is kind of intimidating for some reason. I, for one, have never cooked or baked with the vegetable myself. Perhaps one of the reasons it is intimidating is because the leaves of the plant are toxic. So: don’t eat the leaves, problem solved! Also you should know that there are two kinds of rhubarb varieties readily available; field-grown rhubarb has an intense flavor with green leaves and reddish...

I was at the Brooklyn Renegade Craft Fair two weeks ago and among the usual abundance of prints, jewelry and t-shirts, I saw something that made me stop in my tracks: Mimi Kirchner’s beautiful tattooed lady dolls.   Styled in the dress of circus performers or flappers, toile-print fabric makes up their arms and legs, marking their cloth bodies with detailed tattoos. Their clothing is carefully detailed, sewn from vintage fabrics and collected notions. One doll wears a red and yellow snake wrapped around her body, a...
Saudi women, campaigning for their right to drive, have asked for Hillary Clinton to lend her voice to the cause. They are unhappy with her response, however Princess Ameerah has spoken in public supporting the cause, electing to appear on American television. Saudi Women For Driving, a collation comprised of leading Saudi women’s rights activists, academics and bloggers, sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asking for her public support. Clinton told reporters at a State Department news conference, "What these women are doing...
My favorite kind of jam is blueberry jam. I went through a phase last summer where I went through jars of the stuff at an alarming rate. Blueberries are just the perfect amount of sweet and their dark berry flavor makes a rich and sharp tasting jam. Last week I wrote about my summer plans to learn to can, and what a delight it was for my first lesson to be about one of my favorite things! I learned how to make this jam recipe from...
During university I used to host a monthly girl brunch at my apartment. I invited all the girls I knew to invite all the girls they knew over on a Sunday and have a potluck style brunch that produced delicious results. There’s just nothing better than a kitchen full of ladies weaving around each other to fry bacon, set out their freshly baked scones or lift a hot waffle out of the iron. I miss those days, but last Sunday I was back in the girl...
