Would You Ride With SheRides?

Have you ever felt uncomfortable taking a cab with a male driver? How would you feel if another lady was driving instead?

Starting Sept. 16, a new cab service called SheRides will be offering cab services for ladies only through their app (which will be available in the Apple Store). Available in Westchester, Long Island and the NYC area, the cabs will be driven by female drivers donning pink scarves, and cater to women exclusively.

SheRides was started by Stella Mateo in an effort to ease the anxiety of women who have ever felt uncomfortable being in such a cramped space with a male stranger. Just last month, a man posing as a livery driver attempted to sexually assault a customer riding with her kids to Queens. The incident was caught on video, bringing increased attention to an already wide-spread worry.

Besides their concern for the safety of women in transportation, SheRides is also breaking down barriers for women who work in the field. Only 5 percent of livery car, green cab, and limo drivers are women, and only 1 percent of yellow taxi drivers are women. In a male-dominated profession, SheRides is changing the face of taxi transportation and empowering women in the workplace.

Would you be more inclined to call a taxi now that you have the option of a ladies-exclusive cab?
