New York City writing program Girls Write Now, which recently celebrated a 15 year anniversary as the first organization in the US with a writing and mentoring model exclusively for girls, matches high school girls from underserved neighborhoods in New York City with professional female writers. These women not only help students develop their confidence and writing abilities-- they also help the girls get published. Girls Write Now mentees have submitted over 500 pieces to Scholastic and have won more than 100 regional and national writing awards, not to mention that 100% of Girls Write Now seniors graduate high school and attend college. In celebration of the women who inspire the group, Girls Write Now is hosting an awards ceremony honoring novelist Tayari Jones, chairman Emma Cookson, and filmmaker Tamra Davis. The event is on May 7th from 6-9 pm and features original work by Girls Write Now participants.
