As we stare down the barrel of 2017 and the looming Trumpocalypse, sometimes it can be hard to know what to do.
President Obama has been doing his part to protect some of those rights most at risk, using the last of his time in office to introduce rules requiring states to direct federal funds towards services related to contraception, sexually transmitted infections, fertility, pregnancy care, and breast and cervical cancer screening, regardless of whether providers also perform abortions. In other words, to health care providers like Planned Parenthood.
We’re not all President of the United States, but you can do your part too. Planned Parenthood, and the women and men it treats, still desperately need your donations. Not only because your donations can go towards providing abortions, while federal funds cannot; but because anti-choicers are already hell-bent on rescinding Obama’s “new HHS abortion rule” (um, even though the law doesn't fund abortions? Ugh) and starving Planned Parenthood of funding even for its non-abortion-related health services.
The least you can do is back Obama up on this one.
The new Congress is being sworn in today and now is the time to donate to Planned Parenthood. After you do, tweet about it, write to your new representative. In other words, do anything you can to send a message that Planned Parenthood matters.
Here is a list of names you donate under to make donating even more satisfying:
-Mike Pence (although he’s probably donated enough by now)
-Steven H. Aden (see above)
-Paul Ryan (the smug anti-choicer has just been re-elected House Speaker)
-Todd Akin (the Republican who claimed that a woman’s body can “shut that whole thing down” in the case of “legitimate rape”)
-Mike Huckabee (who during the primaries said there would be zero funding for Planned Parenthood should he win the presidency)
-Rev. Franklin Graham (outspoken anti-choice reverend who actually left the GOP over allowing any funding to go Planned Parenthood, which he likens to a Nazi concentration camp)
-Any sexist jerk you can find in the comments online (I still get thank you emails addressed to dear Drew)
Thanks Obama. We won't let you down.
